The Onyx Coat production begins…

October 14th, 2010 Comments Off

Upon realizing that I simply can’t keep up with the demand that’s present for my coats alone, I considered both going to Thailand and hiring a seamstress to help with the production. Upon much thought, I realized the solution was closer than I thought.

As a local, hand production, one-of-a-kind, up-cycled and environmentally friendly based designer, why not operate as I do in the rest of my life where I try to buy and hire local and within my community as much as I can. So why not produce local, and by local I mean, why not hire my mom and sister the founders of Generations Quilting (named as such because they are the 4th and 5th generations of quilters in my family. A tradition that has been passed down from mother to daughter since my great great grandmother) to help me produce my Onyx Coats? Why not support their female, family, hand made company as they support mine?

So I’m headed home to San Diego right after my first SF Trunk Sale/fund-raiser for production costs on the coats. Please come out to my trunk sale which in true re-use fashion will be paired with a clothing/costume swap next Thursday October 21st to support re-use and help me produce more coats! Keep posted here and on Facebook for more info.

If you live in California, once my coats are made, in a few weeks, I’ll be scheduling trunk/coat sales in San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara on my drive back up. Not only do I get to go home and visit my family and two adorable nieces, but I get to see all of my friends along my way home! I love when life, love and being able to support yourself all flow on one path.

Onyx and Warrior Within collaborate… Here come the Onesies!

September 20th, 2010 § 0

I’m really excited to be working with two inspirational women with such integrity and forsight into our communities clothing desires. Maria Tabia and Jen Fritz are the co-creators of the local San Francisco company Warrior Within Designs.

You can find their story of starting Warrior Within Designs at and Shakti Sunfire’s blog about them on

Warrior Within is best known for their absolutely sexy, cute, playful and fun Onesies that many hoopers have already picked up on and are in love with.

Soon you will find a custom Onyx Onesie especially styled and signed by Onyx for your darker more sensuous side where ever you find Onyx’s Closet. They are a great option to add underneath Onyx adornments and especially Onyx Coats!

Right now though Miss Rosie and I will be grand premiering Onesie’s to hoopers nation wide on our Tour De Hoop starting right after Hoop Camp (and yes, we WILL have Onesie’s with us at Hoop Camp for those of you who just can’t wait! See you soon)

TO ORDER ONE GO TO or email them at and tell them that Onyx sent you

A wedding dress for a red haired angel…

September 10th, 2010 § 0

Jenny and Quinton had the most magical wedding ceremony on the Playa this year at sunset on Wednesday surrounded (literally) by their friends and a few random Burning Man joiners (that were welcomed with open arms of course). They were married by Shakti Sunfire with words of spiraling paths and danced their vowed to each other in a silent freestyle movement of grace.  I feel so blessed to have witnessed these vows and to continually support these two beautiful people with my heart as they support me in so many ways. Thank you Jenny for giving me the opportunity to make you something to wear that is as beautiful as you are! I love you!!

Taking Coat Pre-Orders now!

August 9th, 2010 § 4

Okay ladies!  You’ve been asking and I’m now taking pre-orders on my fleece coats!!!

I’ve worn mine for a year and it brings me so much joy to finally be able to bring the amazing feeling it gives me (like being wrapped up in your favorite robe while looking like you have a couture gown on) to my friends!
Each is made of fleece or sweat shirt material, has raw edges, a one of a kind (raw) leather belt and big hood
–The basic coat (with no ruffles in the back) is $300
–The coat with ruffles is $350

My guess is that I can get the first 5 done by the Playa so if you want one for this burn contact me soon (once you order I will put you on the list and the coats will be made in that order).

Onyx’s Closet at the SF Mecca Revue

I had such a wonderful time last night with good friends, amazing belly dancing acts, a gorgeous venue and so many people to share my creations with!

A few new things…

August 8th, 2010 § 0

some (snap shots) of new stuff…

This has to be my favorite project so far!

July 26th, 2010 § 2

I can’t tell you how excited I am for one of my newest projects.  Jenny and Quinton are getting married on the Playa (meaning at Burning Man) this year. They exchanged private vows last year but wanted to share their love with their friends and community this year. I was extremely honored when Jenny asked me to design her dress. She gave me her old dress and told me to do whatever I wanted. Yes, a bride without control issues! She is a testament to giving out love and allowing it to come back to her. I can only hope that the dress I make will stand a chance in complimenting the glow she will have that day.

The original dress

close up of the front so far

I’ll keep posting as it unravels. It’s only pinned so far and I’m currently trying to figure out the structure of the skirt so she can wear it that week as much as she wants.

I love my life!

The amazing woman of our community are my inspiration!

Send me pictures of you rocking my creations!

Here’s Susan Lee in my feather top.  She’s gorgeous!

Progress Shot of Jenny’s Coat

July 15th, 2010 § 1

I just had my first fitting on my first custom coat Wednesday night!  This is a progress shot of the custom coat I’m making for Jennifer Severo.  It’s such an honor to be able to make things for, and inspired by, the beautiful woman in my life whether I’ve just met them or have known them for years.  As you can see it still has pins in it, but the arms and skirt portion have bunching almost like a flower when it starts to open.  When I look at Jenny with her bright red hair I see a bright red rose opening up to reveal inner light. (The Inner Light part’s a super secret ninja mission for now. Okay, maybe not so secret, but definitely ninja, stay tuned for more)…

Dark Blossoms

July 15th, 2010 § 2

My first collection Dark Blossoms has been a huge success!

I sold about half of it at Movement Play last month and will be taking the rest of it plus the beginning of my new collection to the SF Mecca Revue on August 7th.  Here are the last pictures from my photo shoot of that collection.  I am so proud of where this collection went and I can’t wait to start my next one which will include lots of coats, belly dancing skirts and even a custom wedding dress!

Set 2 from my 1st photo shoot

July 4th, 2010 § 7

As I sit here with my heart full of love and pain at such a changing moment in my life I look to the future and see a life full of creation and sharing of myself.  I’d like to thank Rich once again for not only being my photographer but for being my largest supporter from the beginning and the man who told me that it’s okay to be ONYX.

Everything I’m wearing are pieces from Onyx’s Closet.  I use about 80% recycled materials and each piece is a ONE OF A KIND piece of art that comes with a whole lot of Onyx-love. The next place I’ll be vending is at the SF Mecca Revue which should be an amazing event since it’s thrown by the amazing Miss Rosie!

I’d also like to thank a million people (okay more like 8-10) but for this post I’d like to thank Susan Lee (who’s an amazing breath-work teacher by the way) for being the perfect owner of this amazing top.

Onyx Coats!

June 29th, 2010 § 2

I’m now on the road to focusing on jackets until Burning Man. Everyone wants one for Burning Man because as I jokingly call it a Couture Snuggy, it is extremely warm, comfortable, soft and as you can see, pretty fashionable.  I do have to admit that I notice all the heads turning as I walk by and they’re all looking at that back white ruffles which are surprising because of the contrast to the deep black and simply the sheer unexpectedness.  I have two custom orders already and I’m really excited!  I’ve never done custom orders before so depending on how these two go, I might make them all custom or decide to make them as I do my other clothing (each as a piece of art that comes to me organically).

This is the first one I made for myself.  As always, there’s more to come…

Premiere Opening Of Onyx’s Closet

June 29th, 2010 § 5

This weekend was my first official experience vending

(Photo from DJ Dragonfly who was rockin it all weekend!)

and I couldn’t think of a better place to have that experience than at such a heartfelt, family oriented and personally meaningful festival such as Movement Play.  I’ve found lately through so many experiences that the more you put out to the world, the more you will receive, and my heart is overflowing with the praise and support I received this weekend.

It’s funny how the whole circle (of life) comes around.  Last year at Movement Play was the birth of my relationship with dance as self-love.  Up until the Saturday night one year ago at MP when Beats Antique played and Zoe Jakes danced, I had “danced” before, kind of wiggled in one place is a better description actually, but something happened that night. While being surrounded by warm and accepting people moving in all sorts of ways, some to the music others not, simply doing whatever their body said it wanted to do at that moment with no judgement, I let go of all of the control and self judgement. I let go of my fear of being “seen”.

For too much of my life I have hid, afraid to share who I am. That night I let it all go. That night my life changed. That night I Danced!  Since then I have been going to Ecstatic Dance and opening myself up little by little through dance which bled into the rest of my life until almost one year later a new person stood looking back at me in the mirror, and her name was Onyx. Lauren lived in reclusive fear, Onyx doesn’t apologize for who she is, she is dark, sensual, calm, open and shares herself with the world that gives her so much back.

Thank you Jenna Luna, Jenny Severo Susan Lee, Christabel ZamorMelissa (Candy) Wren, and Rosie and Ken Masters for supporting me in my dreams.

My First Review

June 16th, 2010 § 0

I have my first review, how exciting!!

Thanks Laura for coming to visit my ‘closet’ at LIB and for such a wonderful and surprising gift : )

* Impressive fashion:  Onyx

This woman came out of my same B. Arch program,  and I am so glad to see another person using their Architectural vocabulary in other arts.  Very subtle punches in the color, body-flattering cuts, a harmonious collage of textures in a kind of “deconstructed” Victorian Gothic vintage.  For the price of other manufactured pieces I’ve seen sold around, you could get a tremendous upgrade from this one-of-a-kind clothing designer.  It reminds of “Coco Before Channel,” whose fashions revolutionized femininity by working with a different body type and paring down the forms to a contemporary aesthetic. -Laura Novowelsg

So I’ve finally got some shots of the feather pieces I’ve been working on lately!  They all have clips on the back and are meant to be worn any way you want. I love to wear them on belts, skirts, or pants… on the hip, lower back, the back of the neck, or on a necklace…

All of these pieces will be available at Movement Play.

Personal Style: Use The Tips, Ignore the Rules.

June 13th, 2010 § 0

I’m often asked where my own personal style came from.

It’s probably because my schooling/training is in design rather than fashion, but I don’t believe my “personal style” to be that I wear a lot of black, wear black eyeliner or make most of my clothes. I actually look at personal style from it’s structure first. The most basic structure you have to work with is your body (it’s like the building’s site).  The first thing I usually tell people when they want my help on personal style is not what they were expecting. I tell them to ask themselves “what body type do I have” and then secondly “what do I want my body to look like”.

There are many beauty tips out there on how to accentuate certain features (I’ll talk more about some of these in my next blog).  That doesn’t mean though that you should follow these as RULES of beauty.  It’s important to remember that what they are telling you is correct, if you want to look “standard” or fit a predetermined definition of feminine or masculine.  I personally though, don’t EVER want to be standard.  So if you want to look thinner, taller or more hour glass shaped then use the tips but don’t believe that you HAVE TO follow the tips they give for your specific body type.  Fashion is about looking like everyone else, personal style is about your uniqueness. Use the tips, ignore the rules.

Some ways that I use the tips and ignore the rules

- I have a really long face and every “beauty expert” says that women with long faces should add bangs and keep the volume on top down in order to make their face seem shorter.  So, because I don’t want to look ’standard’, I did the oposite.  I love my mohawk.  I love that it makes my face even longer and that gives me a unique look (personal style) that is not very common. (see image above)

- I also usually just accept that nature just made me thin and no matter what I do to try to change it that’s just who I am, for right now at least (though that doesn’t mean I give up trying to achieve the most healthy body weight I can).  I’ve chosen, for the most part, that I don’t want to try to over emphasis curves like the rules say I am supposed to for my body type and instead often play with androgyny or being long and flowy (which is still feminine but not the epitome of it, which is curvy).

(Shane of The ‘L’ Word is super androgynously HOT)

- Being 5′-8″, I’m on the tall side and being thin makes me look even longer, but lately I’ve been wearing this one black skirt (on top of all my flowy pants as well) that extends my torso (kind of in the flapper style).  Fashion consultants would definitely warn against this, the rule for long torso’s is to wear high waisted belts, but in the world of personal style I choose that I like playing with the flapper style and have fun doing it.

(Flapper cuts)

This doesn’t mean that you have to break all the rules. That’s not what I’m saying, just use them (by following or not following them) to help you achieve your own personal style.
